Professional Behavior: as part of the business class curriculum, which applies to any class I teach, you will need to use professional behavior. It is important to learn these skills now as you will need these skills to succeed in whatever industry you decide to work in.
1. Arrive on time, bring proper materials.
As a student…
Showing up late causes a disruption in the class, is disrespectful to the class and to the teacher. |
As an employee…
Showing up late is stealing time from the employer, time-wasting and chronically being late can and will eventually cost you your job. |
2. Pay attention, put your cell phone away, be present.
As a student…
If you are constantly asking to leave the room, always on a cell phone you are not really making a commitment to your education and are displaying a lack of respect to yourself, other students, and the teacher. Consequences will be low grades and a lack of opportunities brought forth to you. |
As an employee…
Employees texting, tik tok-ing, snapchatting etc during business hours or during a business meeting shows a lack of respect for your coworkers and your boss. These types of behaviors would result in poor performance evaluation, poor business reputation, and this may cause you to be passed up on promotions or opportunities, or cost you your job. |
3. Negative behavior, acting out. This usually occurs because of outside influences that carry over into the classroom.
As a student…
Does NOT resolve your problem! Keeps others from getting their work done. Hurts your ability to be successful in this class. |
As an employee…
You could become what is known as a “toxic employee”. Your behavior spreads to others creating a negative, highly stressful work environment potentially causing you to lose your job. The reputation you gain from this will make it difficult to get a new one and will make available opportunities very small. |
Remember that you are responsible for your actions! How can you ensure this doesn’t happen? COMMUNICATION! I do not know there is a problem unless you come and see me, take charge of your emotions and conduct yourself in a mature manner, that is professional behavior.
4. Commitment to excellence and integrity. Even if this is not your favorite subject, take what you can away from it, you never know if there might be something valuable and interesting. Be honest about the status of your work. I can’t help you if you are being less than truthful.
As a student…
Stop doing just the bare minimum to pass - YOU ARE BETTER THAN THAT! Also DUE DATES MATTER! If an assignment is a week past the due date you can earn no more than a “3”. If an assignment is more than a week late, you will earn no more than a “2.5”. I will NOT accept an assignment 2 weeks past its deadline. Why? If you are late on an assignment then you have been given more time to work on the assignment than everyone else - this is not fair to other students. If you are not understanding an assignment you will need to communicate that to me asap and we will work together on it! |
As an employee…
You will never get ahead by just doing the bare minimum - there will always be someone willing to do more and work harder and they will get promoted. If you are looking to move ahead and better yourself in the industry you work in, hard work will win. In the real world missing a deadline is unacceptable and in some cases will cost you money or future work/clients. Learn to prioritize your time! |
